Indian Parliamentary Committee Approves GST Legislation, Recommends Amendments

India’s government announced Aug. 7 that the Standing Committee on Finance approved the goods and services tax (GST) legislation, but made several recommendations to amend provisions relating to tax rates, exemptions, exclusions, thresholds, administrative arrangements, dispute resolution, and the tax structure.

Under the proposed GST regime, both the central government and Indian states will have the power to tax the supply of goods and services from the primary stage to final consumption.

The GST proposals, which have been pending for several years, would subsume indirect levies such as excise duties, services tax, and sales tax.
