Jail for bogus butcher who led £1m VAT scam

A bogus butcher who headed a nine-strong gang involved in a £1 million VAT scam was starting a four-year jail sentence this week.

Kaiser Matlub, from Spinneyfield, Moorgate, led the conspiracy to make fraudulent VAT refund claims by faking invoices but was snared by an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs.

Co-defendants Stanley Miller, of St Paul’s Close, Dinnington and Simon Spurr, of Sawn Moor Avenue, Thurcroft, were both spared jail but handed stiff unpaid work sentences.

Three other men from Sheffield, one from Nelson in Lancashire and two of no fixed address were also sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Friday.
